The best business bank account UK banks offer gives your limited company its own sterling account, free Faster Payments at most banks and FSCS protection of up to £120,000 for each company at each bank, the limit in force since 1 December 2025. Some accounts have no monthly fee, and most high street banks waive theirs for the first year.
Getting accepted is the hard part. Most UK banks want a director who lives in the UK and check the credit history of everyone on the application. Some cap turnover at £2 million or £3 million, and some refuse companies owned by another company. Refusals are common, and banks rarely explain them.
This is where Binderr comes in. Our regulated banking partners open multi-currency accounts for UK companies in days, fully online, with no UK credit history needed and no minimum balance. We prepare your KYC file and documents, make the introduction and can form the company first. One team, no long email chains.
Our top-rated, licensed banking providers open accounts for UK companies in days, wherever the directors live, with no branch visit and no deposit to lock away.

Why the Best UK Banks for Business Accounts Are Hard to Open
The best UK banks for business accounts are built for one customer: a company run by people who live in the UK, with a UK credit history and a turnover the bank's small business team can handle. If your company fits that picture, the best business bank account UK banks offer can open in a day. If it does not, the application often stops before anyone reads it.
The Best Banks for Business Accounts in the UK Want a UK Resident
Each of the best banks for business accounts in the UK sets a residence rule. Barclays needs at least one UK resident on the application and three years of home addresses, Lloyds wants UK residents with a UK mobile number, and Santander and Starling want every owner in the UK. NatWest and HSBC also check the credit history of the people behind the company, which a founder with no UK address history will struggle to pass.
Turnover Limits at the Best Banks for Small Business Accounts in the UK
Each of the best banks for small business accounts in the UK draws a line on size. Lloyds' business account is for turnover of £3 million or less. Metro Bank's Business Bank Account stops at £2 million of turnover or balance sheet, and NatWest asks for proof of turnover above £2 million. Cross the line and you move to a commercial team, and the best banks for mid-size businesses in the UK in 2026 price that relationship case by case.
Open a Business Bank Account in the UK
You can open a business bank account in the UK in days with the right partner and a complete file. This is what we do for you.
- No UK resident needed: Our partners take UK companies whose directors and owners live abroad.
- No UK credit history: Approval rests on your KYC file, not on years of UK addresses.
- Open in days: A multi-currency account in days, fully online, with no branch visit.
- Multi-currency from day one: Pounds, euros, dollars and more in one account, with real IBANs.
- Cheaper across borders: International payments from €5 and FX well below bank margins.
- KYC pack prepared: We tell you what to send and check it before it goes.
- One point of contact: No email chains between you, the partner and a bank.
Why UK Banks Refuse Business Accounts
At the best UK banks for business accounts, most refusals come from the structure, not the business. Metro Bank only takes companies owned by individuals, not by a parent company. Starling refuses corporate shareholders and holding companies. Monzo takes sole traders and companies limited by shares, but no LLPs or partnerships, and the company must be tax resident in the UK and nowhere else. A founder who meets every one of these rules usually opens the best business bank account UK companies can get within days. Read more on why banks reject business account applications.
Sectors the Best UK Banks for Small Businesses Avoid
Even the best UK banks for small businesses have a list of sectors they will not take, whatever the file looks like. Monzo's published list includes gambling, virtual currencies, money services, precious metals, shell companies and CBD products. A crypto business needs a specialist route, as our guide to crypto-friendly business bank accounts in the UK explains.
A Refusal Makes the Next Application Harder
Banks rarely tell you why they said no, and the next bank may ask whether you have been refused before. Work out which rule you missed before you apply again, and send one complete file to one bank. In the meantime, a partner account lets the company get paid, and one of the best UK business banks can follow later.

What Makes the Best Business Bank Account for Small Business in the UK
People often ask which is the best business bank account in the UK as if there were one answer. The best business bank account UK founders can open is the one that accepts the company, charges little for the way the company really pays and gets paid, and opens when it is needed. Four things decide the best business bank account for small business in the UK, and one simple method compares them.
Who the Best Bank Accounts for Business in the UK Accept
The best bank accounts for business in the UK each have a stated customer: UK residents, UK tax residence, a turnover cap, a limit on owners or no parent company. Read those rules first and drop any bank whose test you fail: the best UK business bank account is one you can open.
The Fee After the Free Period
Free periods on the best business banking accounts in the UK are generous, and they end. Barclays, Lloyds and Santander give 12 months free, then charge £8.50, £10 and £9.99 a month. NatWest gives start-ups and switchers 2 years free on everyday transactions. Starling and Monzo Lite charge no monthly fee at all. Our guide to free business bank accounts in the UK looks at the no-fee accounts in more detail.
Payment, Cash and Currency Charges
For the best business banking, UK companies should look past the monthly fee, which is the smallest cost for most of them. Check what each payment, cash deposit and transfer abroad costs, and the margin on currency. The best UK business bank account for Faster Payments can be an expensive one for a company that pays a supplier in euros every week.
FSCS Deposit Protection
On the best UK business bank accounts, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per depositor at each bank for firms that fail after 30 November 2025, up from £85,000. A limited company or LLP is a separate legal person, so it has its own £120,000 limit at each bank. Brands that share one banking licence count as one bank: HSBC UK, first direct and HSBC Private Banking share a single limit. A company holding more than £120,000 can spread reserves across banks with separate licences.
How to Compare UK Business Bank Accounts
To compare UK business bank accounts fairly, price a normal year, not a month. Before you pick a business bank account, compare UK tariffs on your likely number of payments, cash deposits and international transfers; Lloyds and Metro Bank publish fee calculators for this. Then compare business bank accounts in the UK on service. Every large provider must publish an independent service quality survey, a business bank account comparison in the UK on service, and the results published in August 2026 cover the 17 largest business current account providers.
UK Business Bank Account Comparison
This UK business bank account comparison covers the eight banks behind the best business bank accounts in the UK for small companies: Barclays, HSBC UK, Lloyds Bank, NatWest, Santander, Metro Bank, Starling Bank and Monzo. All eight hold UK banking licences, so eligible deposits carry FSCS protection. Online-only accounts from e-money firms are a different product, and our guide to UK challenger banks and EMIs for businesses covers them.
Bank | Best for | Who it turns away | Monthly fee |
|---|---|---|---|
Barclays | New companies that want a branch network and free everyday electronic payments | Applications with no UK-resident person on them | Free for 12 months, then £8.50 |
HSBC UK | Small UK tax-resident companies with modest borrowing needs | Applicants who are not UK tax resident or fail the credit check | £0 on Small Business Banking; £10 on Business Banking after 12 free months |
Lloyds Bank | UK businesses with turnover up to £3 million | Non-UK residents and turnover above £3 million | Free for 12 months, then £10 |
NatWest | Start-ups and switchers that want 2 years of free everyday banking | Files with no UK resident, a bankruptcy or a County Court Judgment | £0, but £0.35 per automated payment |
Santander | Small companies with one or two owners who live in the UK | More than 2 directors or owners, anyone living abroad, payment and e-money firms | Free for 12 months, then £9.99 |
Metro Bank | Businesses that want in-store service and can keep £6,000 in the account | Turnover above £2 million, a parent company, fewer than half the owners in the UK | £8, waived at £6,000 or more |
Starling Bank | UK-owned trading companies with simple needs | Corporate shareholders, holding companies, directors or owners abroad | £0 |
Monzo | Sole traders and small UK companies that want a fast app account | LLPs, partnerships, companies tax resident abroad, high-risk sectors | £0 on Lite, £9 on Pro |
When you compare UK business bank accounts, read the middle columns first. On any business bank account, UK comparison sites lead with the fee, but the fees are close together, from nothing to £10 a month, while the rules on who each bank takes are very different. A company owned by another company is refused by Metro Bank and Starling, a company with three UK directors does not fit Santander's Classic account, and a director abroad fails most of the top business bank accounts in the UK at once. Most lists of the top 10 business bank accounts in the UK rank on price; the rules decide whether you get the best business bank account UK founders expect or a refusal.
Barclays
There is no monthly fee for the first 12 months for businesses without a Barclays business current account, then £8.50 a month. Its Business Account tariff makes everyday electronic payments free and charges 60p per £100 of cash paid in at a machine or Post Office, or £1.20 per £100 at the counter. International payments cost £15 online and £6 to receive above £100, and the currency conversion charge is up to 2%.
HSBC UK
HSBC UK runs two accounts for smaller firms. The Small Business Banking Account has no monthly fee and free UK digital payments, for companies borrowing up to £100,000, and you must be a UK tax resident and pass a credit check. The Business Banking Account costs £10 a month after 12 free months for start-ups and switchers and adds a relationship manager. Cash is expensive: its price list effective 15 December 2025 charges £1.50 per credit plus 1.5% of the value, so £400 paid in at a branch costs £7.50. International payments cost £17 online. See how to open an HSBC business account in the UK.
Lloyds Bank
Lloyds is for UK-based businesses with turnover of £3 million or less. A first business account with Lloyds has no monthly fee for 12 months, then £10 a month under charges that apply from July 2026. Cash costs £0.85 per £100 at an Immediate Deposit Machine and £1.60 per £100 at the counter. International payments cost £15 online and £28 in a branch, plus £7 to receive one above £100. Lloyds says an account could open within 24 hours, and extra checks can take it to about 7 days.
NatWest
NatWest has no monthly fee on its Standard Tariff but charges per item: £0.35 for each automated payment in or out and £0.95 per £100 of cash, under charges correct at 20 April 2026. Start-ups trading for less than 12 months with turnover up to £1 million, and switchers up to £2 million using the Current Account Switch Service, get 2 years of free everyday banking. New accounts opened from 20 April 2026 lose that offer if cash paid in exceeds £200,000 in 12 months. International payments cost £15 online, and everyone on the application is credit checked.
Santander
Santander's Business Current Account Classic costs £9.99 a month after 12 free months for start-ups and switchers. It is for UK-registered sole traders, partnerships, LLPs and private limited companies with no more than two directors, owners or partners, all aged 18 or over and living in the UK. Up to £1,000 of cash a month is free at Santander cash machines, then £1.25 per £100, the same rate as at the counter. International payments and CHAPS cost £25 each under terms effective 28 April 2026.
Metro Bank
Metro Bank's Business Bank Account costs £8 a month, waived in any month the balance stays at £6,000 or more, which also brings 30 free transactions; otherwise each costs £0.30. New customers get 12 months fee-free and full switchers get 31 months. It is for businesses with turnover or a balance sheet up to £2 million, owned only by individuals, with at least half of the signatories, directors and beneficial owners living in the UK. Cash in store costs 1% and SWIFT payments £25. Metro Bank offers walk-in same-day account opening in its stores.
Starling Bank
Starling is a fully licensed UK bank with no monthly fee and free UK payments. It publishes clear international pricing: a 0.4% conversion fee plus £5.50 for a SWIFT payment or £0.30 on a local network. Cash costs 0.7% at the Post Office, with a £3 minimum. Its rules are tight: a limited company or LLP registered at Companies House, every person with significant control an individual living in the UK, every director with account access a UK resident, and no holding companies. Read our Starling business account review.
Monzo
Monzo is also a licensed UK bank. The Lite plan is free, Pro costs £9 a month and Team starts at £25 a month. Cash costs £1 per deposit at PayPoint or the Post Office, and incoming euros or other currencies are converted to pounds for a 1% fee, capped at £1,000. Applicants must be in the UK when they apply.
Best Business Bank in the UK for Small Businesses
There is no single best business bank in the UK for small businesses, only the best fit for each company. Which is the best business bank account in the UK for your company comes down to the rules in the table. For a UK-owned company that trades in pounds, the best bank accounts for business in the UK are Starling and the HSBC Small Business Banking Account, which charge no monthly fee, and NatWest's two free years suit a new start-up. For a company with owners abroad, a parent company or regular payments in other currencies, even the best bank in the UK for a business account may refuse the file or charge heavily.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a UK Business Account
There is a better route for any company the best UK business banks turn away or charge heavily. You can open a UK business account with one of our regulated payment partners, which work with UK companies owned from anywhere. They open multi-currency accounts in days, fully online, with no minimum balance and no UK credit history needed. International payments and currency exchange cost far less than at a high street bank.
Feature | UK banks | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Time to open | Same day to about 7 days for a simple UK-owned file; weeks or a refusal for a complex one | Usually 2 to 4 business days from a complete file |
Who they accept | At least one UK-resident director, often all of them, and UK tax residence | UK companies with directors and owners anywhere |
Credit history | A credit check on each person, with UK address history | No UK credit history needed |
Ownership | Some banks refuse parent companies, holding companies or more than two owners | Corporate shareholders, with ownership traced to real people |
Minimum balance | None, apart from Metro Bank's £6,000 fee waiver | None |
Monthly cost | £0 to £10, often free for the first 12 to 24 months | €30 to €100 a month on a published plan |
Multi-currency | Sterling on the standard account; a separate account for each currency | Several currencies in one account, with real IBANs |
International payments | £15 to £25 online at the high street banks | €5 to €25 to send, €5 or less to receive |
Foreign exchange | Up to 2% at Barclays; 0.4% at Starling | 0.25% to 1.0% over the interbank rate |
Protection of your money | FSCS up to £120,000 per company at each bank | Safeguarding in segregated accounts |
The table is honest both ways. A UK bank is cheaper on the monthly fee, often free for a year or two, and it gives FSCS cover, cash deposits and lending. For a UK-owned company that only moves pounds inside the UK, the best business bank account UK banks offer can be the cheaper choice. The partner route wins for a company with owners abroad, a parent company, or regular payments in other currencies. Our guide to a business bank account vs an EMI account explains the differences.
Opening a Business Bank Account in the UK With Our Partners
Opening a business bank account in the UK through a partner takes four steps. We check that the company and its owners fit the partner, usually within a day. We build the KYC file with you from the documents the company already holds. The partner checks identity online and reviews the file, usually within 2 to 4 business days. You then fund the account and start using it. Read how to open a business bank account remotely.
How Client Money Is Protected
A payment partner does not lend out client money. It safeguards it, keeping customer funds apart from its own money in segregated accounts at banks, instead of relying on the FSCS. Many UK companies get the best business banking in the UK by using both: a UK bank for reserves and cash, and a partner account for currencies and payments abroad. Read what an EMI account is for how safeguarding works in practice.

Best Bank for Small Business in the UK by Business Type
The best bank for small business in the UK depends on who owns the company, how it gets paid and where its money goes. These are the six profiles we see most often.
A Sole Trader Moving to a Limited Company
A sole trader's account belongs to the person, while a limited company needs its own account in the company's name. The bank treats the company as a new customer, so the best business bank account for small business in the UK may change, and the free period for start-ups usually applies again. Open the best UK business bank account for the company before the first invoice goes out in its name. Our guide to sole trader vs limited company in the UK explains when the switch makes sense.
Best UK Business Bank Account for Small Business Start-Ups
For a new company owned by UK residents, the best UK business bank account for small business start-ups is usually a free period followed by a low fee. On price, the best bank to open a business account in the UK as a start-up is NatWest, whose 2 free years for businesses trading less than 12 months are the longest offer in this guide. Starling and Monzo Lite never charge a monthly fee, which makes either the best UK small business bank account on cost where the owners qualify. Our guide to the best business bank accounts for UK start-ups goes deeper on this profile.
A Company With Owners Outside the UK
Founders abroad often ask which is the best bank for a business account in the UK, and this is where the best banks for small business accounts in the UK stop working. Santander and Starling want every owner in the UK, Metro Bank at least half, and Barclays and NatWest one UK resident on the application. A company whose directors all live abroad fails most of these tests, while our partners take it as routine. Our guide to UK business bank accounts for non-residents covers this case in full.
An Importer or Exporter
A company that buys or sells abroad pays most of its banking costs in international fees and currency margins. At £15 to £25 per payment and a conversion charge of up to 2% at Barclays, even the best bank in the UK for a business account is costly for this profile, and a separate account is needed for each currency. For an importer, the best bank for small business in the UK is often not a bank at all: a partner account holds euros, dollars and pounds together. Our guide to multi-currency business accounts in the UK explains the set-up.
Best Banks for Small Businesses in the UK That Handle Cash
For a shop, a market trader or a takeaway, the best bank for small business in the UK is the one with the cheapest cash tariff, not the lowest monthly fee. The best banks for small businesses in the UK that handle cash are the ones with low per £100 rates: Barclays charges 60p per £100 at a machine or Post Office, Lloyds 85p at a deposit machine and NatWest 95p plus a 95p item charge. HSBC charges 1.5% of the value plus £1.50 per credit, and its price list from 14 December 2026 raises branch cash to 2%. Our partners do not take cash, so a cash business needs a UK bank.
Best Banks for Mid-Size Businesses in the UK in 2026
For a growing company, the best banks for mid-size businesses in the UK in 2026 are the ones with relationship teams. Above £3 million of turnover, Lloyds moves you to its commercial banking tariff, and Metro Bank moves businesses above £2 million to its Commercial Current Account. HSBC's Business Banking Account adds a relationship manager for borrowing above £100,000, and NatWest offers relationship managers to businesses with turnover above £500,000. At this size, the best business bank account UK firms can get is a negotiated relationship rather than a published tariff.
Documents Needed for a UK Business Bank Account
For the best business bank account, UK banks and our partners ask for the same three groups of documents: the company's records, identity evidence for each person behind it, and proof of what the business does.
For the Company
Expect to give the company number and date of incorporation from Companies House, the registered office and trading address, the articles of association and the register of persons with significant control. Where another company owns shares, add an ownership chart traced to each ultimate beneficial owner. Since 18 November 2025, directors and people with significant control must also verify their identity with Companies House, so banks can see whether that step is done.
For Each Director and Owner
Each person gives a passport or driving licence and proof of home address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement. Barclays asks for three years of addresses, and HSBC asks for the previous address if you have lived at the current one for less than 3 years.
For the Business and Its Money
Santander asks for proof of what the business does, such as a business insurance schedule, a recent invoice from a supplier or the last tax return. For a new company, a short note on what it sells, who its customers are and where its money comes from answers most follow-up questions before they are asked.
When Directors Live Outside the UK
A director abroad needs the same documents, but proof of address will be foreign, and some of the best banks for small business accounts in the UK cannot verify it. Certified copies and a translation may be needed. Our partners accept foreign documents as routine work.

Prepare a File for the Best UK Business Banks
Most delays come from the paperwork, not the company, so we fix the gaps before anything is sent.
- Avoid a refusal: We check the file against the provider's rules before you apply.
- Ownership mapped: Every shareholder traced to the people who own the company.
- Company records in order: Articles and PSC register checked against Companies House.
- Source of funds evidenced: Contracts, invoices and statements, not a written summary.
- Faster than going direct: One complete submission and fewer rounds of questions.
- Clear pricing, no surprises: Fees confirmed in writing before the account opens.
What the Best Bank Accounts for Small Businesses in the UK Cost
The best bank accounts for small businesses in the UK are cheap to hold and expensive to use across borders. Monthly fees run from nothing to £10, but international payments, currency conversion and cash deposits cost far more over a year. The table sets the published UK bank charges against our partners' plans.
Charge | Typical range at a local bank | With our partners |
|---|---|---|
Account opening | Free at every bank in this guide | Free or a low one-off fee |
Monthly account fee | £0 to £10, often free for the first 12 to 24 months | €30 to €100 a month on a published plan |
Minimum balance | None; Metro Bank waives its £8 fee only at £6,000 or more | None |
Team access | Free at most banks; £25 a month on Monzo Team plus £5 per extra member | Included on the plan |
Additional currency accounts | A separate account per currency; £96 a year each at HSBC for small businesses | Included in one multi-currency account |
Local payments in | Free to £0.35 per payment | Free on most plans |
Local payments out | Free to £0.35 per payment | €0.20 to €4 per payment |
International payments in | Free to £7 per payment above £100; 1% at Monzo when currency is converted | €5 or less per payment |
International payments out | £15 to £25 online at the high street banks, £28 in a Lloyds branch; £5.50 plus 0.4% at Starling | €5 to €25 per payment |
Transfers between your own accounts | Free | Free |
FX margin | Up to 2% at Barclays, 0.4% at Starling; most banks build it into the rate | 0.25% to 1.0% over the interbank rate |
Cash deposits | 60p per £100 at a Barclays machine to 1.5% plus £1.50 a credit at HSBC | Not a cash product |
Audit letters and bank reports | Free to £25 plus VAT per letter | Statements and confirmations online |
The bank column comes from each bank's current published tariff, dated in the bank profiles above, and the partner column from our partners' published plans. For any business bank account, UK comparison figures change with each new tariff, so treat both columns as planning ranges: the final price is confirmed in writing before the account opens.
On the best UK business bank accounts, the money is outside the monthly fee. A company that converts £400,000 a year at up to 2% pays up to £8,000, against £1,000 to £4,000 at 0.25% to 1.0%. Ten international payments a month cost £1,800 a year at £15 each and £3,000 at Santander's or Metro Bank's £25. Even among the best UK banks for small businesses, a shop paying in £4,000 of cash a month, once a week, pays £24 a month at Barclays' machine rate and £66 at HSBC's 1.5% plus £1.50 per credit.
To be fair to the banks, for a UK-owned company that pays and gets paid only in pounds, the best bank accounts for small businesses in the UK usually cost less than any partner plan, and Starling's 0.4% conversion fee is lower than many partner margins. The partner route costs less for companies that hold several currencies, pay suppliers abroad or cannot open a UK bank account at all.

How Long the Best Business Bank Accounts in the UK Take to Open
The best business bank accounts in the UK can open fast for a simple file. Monzo says over 80% of its business accounts open the same day, HSBC opened 65% of its Small Business Banking Accounts within 24 hours between March and May 2026, and Metro Bank opens accounts the same day in store. For a file with owners abroad or a parent company, even the best small business bank account in the UK can take weeks, or end in a refusal.
Stage | Local bank | Our partners |
|---|---|---|
Forming the company | Companies House usually registers online within 24 hours | The same |
Application | Online or in store, with identity and credit checks on each person | Online, with identity checked remotely |
Decision on a simple UK-owned file | Same day to about 7 days | Usually 2 to 4 business days |
Decision on owners abroad or a group structure | Weeks of questions, or a refusal | Usually 2 to 4 business days from a complete file |
Switching from another bank | 7 working days under the Current Account Switch Service | Runs beside your existing account from day one |
What Slows It Down
Delays in opening the best business bank account UK companies want come from the rules above: a director abroad, an owner that is another company, a proof of address the bank cannot verify, or an activity the bank wants to review. Each question adds days, and a late answer sends the file back to the queue.
How to Speed It Up
Pick the best bank to open a business account in the UK for your profile, check its eligibility rules and send a complete file to that one bank. If the company needs to invoice now, open a partner account first so it can get paid while a bank decides.

What Happens After the Account Is Open
Even the best bank accounts for business in the UK come with rules after opening. Fees change when free periods end, and banks review their customers.
When the Free Period Ends
The best business banking accounts in the UK move to their standard tariff automatically: £8.50 a month at Barclays, £10 at Lloyds, £9.99 at Santander and per-item charges at NatWest. Barclays promises at least two months' notice of any increase, and NatWest at least 60 days' notice of changes to its service charges. Put the end date in your calendar and check then whether you still hold the best UK small business bank account for your needs.
Reviews and Changes You Must Report
Even the best UK business bank account comes with reviews. Tell the bank before you add a new owner, change the activity or change the size of your payments, because unexplained changes can trigger one.
Switching Banks Later
The Current Account Switch Service moves your payments and balance in 7 working days for businesses with turnover up to £6.5 million and fewer than 50 employees. When you switch your business bank account, compare UK switching offers first: NatWest gives switchers 2 years free and Metro Bank 31 months. Switching is also how a growing company moves to one of the best banks for mid-size businesses in the UK in 2026.
Why the Company Comes Before the Account
None of the best banks for business accounts in the UK, and no partner, opens a company account before the company exists. Every bank asks for the company number, so the order is always company first and account second. Our UK company registration guide explains the filing, and our guide to how to set up a UK company with a bank account shows how to plan both together.
If you still need to set up a limited company in the UK, we form it for you from €350, and Companies House usually registers an online application within 24 hours. We build the bank file at the same time, so you can apply for the best UK business bank account for the company as soon as it is registered. UK companies pay 19% corporation tax on small profits and 25% at the main rate. Founders abroad should read our guide to UK company formation for non-residents.

Common Mistakes When Choosing a UK Business Bank
Most problems founders have with even the best business bank accounts in the UK start before the application. These are the mistakes we see most often.
Choosing the Best Small Business Bank Account in the UK on Price Alone
The best small business bank account in the UK for your company is not the one with the lowest monthly fee. Among the best banks for small businesses in the UK, a free account that charges 1.5% on cash or £25 per international payment can cost far more than £10 a month elsewhere. Run your own UK business bank account comparison on a real year first.
Assuming the Best UK Small Business Bank Account Stays Free
Free periods of 12 months, 24 months or 31 months all end. A company that picked the best UK small business bank account on its free offer can find itself on a tariff that no longer suits it. Diary the date, and before you renew or move your business bank account, compare UK tariffs again.
Ignoring Currency and International Payment Costs
A company that sells abroad loses more to FX margins and SWIFT charges than to any monthly fee. Check the conversion charge and the fee for each international payment before you choose the best UK business bank account for your company.
Applying to Several Banks at Once
Each application to the best UK business banks can leave a credit search, and several at once look like shopping for approval. Send one complete file to the bank whose rules you meet.
Applying Before the Company Is Registered
Without a company number there is no company account. Form the company first, then apply. A holding structure needs extra planning, because several banks refuse holding companies; our guide on how to set up a UK holding company explains the structure.

Bottom Line
The best business bank account UK companies can open depends on who owns them. The best business bank in the UK for small businesses owned by UK residents is one with free electronic payments and a low fee. For those companies, the best UK business bank account for small business use is Starling, Monzo Lite or HSBC's Small Business Banking Account, which charge no monthly fee. NatWest gives start-ups 2 free years, and Barclays, Lloyds and Santander give 12 months free before charging £8.50 to £10. Every one of them wants UK residents on the file, and several refuse parent companies or owners abroad.
For a company owned from abroad, a group structure or regular payments in other currencies, the best route is a partner account opened in days, online, with no UK credit history needed and far lower costs on payments abroad. We form the company, build the file and open the account with you, and a UK bank can follow later.
