Opening a Free Zone Company Bank Account in the UAE (2026)

Opening a Free Zone Company Bank Account in UAE

A free zone company bank account gives your UAE company AED and foreign currency balances, a local IBAN for clients and suppliers, and the proof of banking that visas, leases and payment gateways ask for. There are no exchange controls, so profits can leave the country freely, and the Central Bank expects low-risk, complete files to open within three business days.

The hard part is qualifying. UAE banks look closely at free zone companies: a flexi desk instead of an office, owners who live abroad, a long ownership chain or a sector the bank dislikes can each turn three days into several weeks. Most banks also want a signatory who lives in the UAE, and a refusal can follow you to the next bank.

This is where we come in. We prepare the file the bank actually asks for and work with licensed banking partners who open multi-currency accounts for free zone companies remotely, with no minimum balance. One team, one clear price, no back-and-forth emails.

Our top-rated, licensed banking providers open accounts for UAE free zone companies without a branch visit or a minimum balance.

Why a Free Zone Company Bank Account Is Hard to Open

It is not harder by law. It is harder because banks see more risk in the typical free zone file, and each bank decides its own risk appetite.

Banks Check Substance

Many free zone companies start on a flexi desk or a virtual office. No bank publishes a rule against them, but banks want to see real activity: visas, signed contracts, a working website or supplier letters. Meydan Free Zone lists "insufficient business substance", meaning a company that exists only on paper, among the main refusal reasons.

Most Banks Want a Resident Signatory

No Central Bank rule requires a UAE resident, but bank policies do. Emirates NBD's digital account needs at least one UAE-resident signatory, and Mashreq NEO BIZ needs a UAE-resident partner or attorney. Meydan says non-resident founders cannot activate a corporate account until they become UAE residents. Read more about opening a bank account in the UAE as a non-resident.

Open a Free Zone Company Bank Account

Banking your free zone company is very doable with the right partner and a complete file. This is what we do for you.

  • Partners built for free zones: Licensed providers that onboard UAE companies every day.
  • No resident signatory needed: Open remotely while you live abroad.
  • Multi-currency from day one: AED, USD, EUR, GBP and more on one account.
  • No minimum balance: Keep your cash working, not parked.
  • Avoid a rejection: We close the gaps before anything is submitted.
  • KYC pack prepared: We tell you what we need and build the file.
  • Clear pricing, no surprises: One quote, every fee listed.

Ownership Chains Slow Everything Down

Every layer of ownership must lead to a real person owning 25% or more. Mashreq NEO BIZ goes further and only accepts companies owned 100% by individuals, with no layered structures. A holding company above your free zone company rules that account out.

Sector and Trading Model

Banks apply extra checks to general trading, crypto, financial services and other high-risk activities. A licence that does not match the money flows is a common refusal reason, for example a consultancy licence receiving large trade payments.

Selling to the Mainland

A free zone company that sells on the Dubai mainland without the right permit, as our guide to free zone company formation in Dubai explains, gives the bank a licence mismatch. Dubai's Free Zone Mainland Operating Permit, launched in October 2025, costs AED 5,000 for six months, and Executive Council Resolution No. 11 of 2025 sets the other routes.

What Happens After a Refusal

A refusal is not the end, but it changes how you apply next. Banks share concerns informally and ask whether you have been refused before, so a second application with the same gaps usually fails again. Find the reason, fix it and apply to a bank or partner whose rules you meet.

What the Central Bank Now Requires

The Central Bank's SME rules, in force since 13 September 2026, set three business days for low-risk complete files and cap other delays at two weeks. A bank must also give a written reason for a refusal, except where the reason is financial crime risk. The rules do not force a bank to accept you, so risk appetite still decides the outcome.

UAE Banks for a Free Zone Company Bank Account

The local banks are well known and trusted, but they are expensive, slow on complex files and quick to refuse. This table shows what their published packages ask for.

Bank

Who it takes

Who it turns away

Monthly cost

Emirates NBD

Established free zone companies with a resident signatory

Low balances, non-resident owners on digital

AED 50,000 average balance on core packages

Mashreq NEO BIZ

Companies owned 100% by individuals

Layered ownership, no UAE-resident partner

AED 99 to AED 199 plus VAT

Commercial Bank of Dubai

Larger companies

New companies without AED 100,000

AED 100,000 average balance

FAB

Residents, and non-residents on Business Call

Low balances

AED 10,000 average balance

RAKBANK

Start-ups on RAKstarter

Complex or high-risk files

AED 103.95 a month, no minimum

ADCB SmartStart

UAE nationals and residents

Non-residents and foreign currency needs

AED 125 plus VAT a month, AED only

Wio Business

Licensed companies with an Emirates ID holder

Owners without UAE residence

AED 99 or AED 249 a month

Read the last two columns together. The published fees look modest, but the balance you must hold and the owners the bank will not take decide whether the account is open to you at all. A new free zone company with owners abroad and no UAE resident fails most of these products before the bank looks at anything else. That is why the route you choose matters more than the bank's brand.

High Fees on Every Payment

Local banks charge for each international transfer. Commercial Bank of Dubai charges AED 21 to AED 31.50 online, Wio AED 26.25 or AED 52.50, and older Emirates NBD schedules show AED 31.50 to AED 52.50. A company paying suppliers abroad every week pays these fees hundreds of times a year.

Wide Currency Margins

UAE banks do not publish their business FX margins, and the margin is usually the largest cost on a foreign payment. Emirates NBD's schedule shows 0.53% to 1.32% just on foreign currency cash deposits.

Large Balances That Earn Nothing

Core packages ask for AED 10,000 to AED 100,000 held on average. Fall below and Emirates NBD's schedule charges AED 157.50 to AED 1,575 a month, depending on the package.

Slow, Paper-Heavy Onboarding

Most banks still want at least one in-person visit, original documents and attested papers from abroad. DMCC's own guide says banks typically require one visit before an account is finalised.

A Faster and Cheaper Way to Open a Free Zone Company Bank Account

There is a better alternative to the local banks. Our licensed banking partners onboard UAE free zone companies as routine work, open accounts remotely and do not ask for a minimum balance.

They are regulated electronic money institutions, not UAE banks. You get a multi-currency account with IBANs, low-cost international payments and tight currency margins. As regulated e-money institutions, they must keep client money separate from their own funds. Accounts typically open in days to about two weeks once the file is complete, which is faster than most local banks manage for a free zone company with owners abroad.

Our partners suit companies that trade internationally, owners who live abroad and anyone who needs an account quickly. A local bank still makes sense for a company that needs cheques, cash deposits or UAE bank finance.

Who the Partner Route Suits

Partners work best for companies that invoice clients abroad, pay overseas suppliers, hold several currencies or are owned by people who live outside the UAE. They are also the faster choice for a new company that needs an IBAN before its first contract. Read more about a multi-currency business bank account in the UAE.

High-Risk Free Zone Companies

Some activities are harder to bank wherever the company is licensed. General trading, precious metals, crypto, payments, gaming and adult content all face extra checks, and many banks decline them outright. Partners have their own limits too: one of ours excludes crypto and adult businesses, for example.

What Banks Ask High-Risk Companies For

Expect detailed questions on customers, suppliers, countries and expected monthly volumes, plus proof of the licence for any regulated activity. A clear compliance setup, such as screening and record keeping, makes the file easier to approve.

How We Handle High-Risk Files

We match the business to a provider whose risk appetite covers it, before anything is submitted. That avoids a refusal that would follow you. Read more about the crypto licence in Dubai if your company deals in digital assets.

Free Zone Company Bank Account by Free Zone

Several free zones help their companies with banking, but none can guarantee an account. The bank always makes the final decision, and the free zone's role is to make the application smoother.

A paid banking service buys help with the application, not approval. Compare what each zone offers with what your company actually needs, such as foreign currency, a resident signatory or fast onboarding.

DMCC

DMCC offers its members banking services with Emirates NBD, Mashreq, Commercial Bank of Dubai and Wio, including a Commercial Bank of Dubai kiosk in Almas Tower and fast-track applications at Mashreq. DMCC's own guide says UAE banks typically require at least one in-person visit before a business account is finalised, so plan a trip if you use a local bank. Read about DMCC company formation.

IFZA

IFZA names Wio and Mashreq among its banking partners and says most of its clients can open an account within a couple of days, which is a typical case rather than a promise. It also has a partnership with Commercial Bank of Dubai, announced in 2022, with relationship managers on site. Read about IFZA company formation.

Meydan Free Zone

Meydan charges AED 1,500 for its bank account service and says the application is usually started within one business day, with approval left to the bank. It states plainly that non-resident founders cannot activate a UAE corporate account without first becoming residents. Read about Meydan Free Zone company formation.

RAKEZ

RAKEZ lists 15 banking partners, from RAKBANK, FAB and Emirates NBD to newer banks such as Ruya and Mbank, which it describes as having no minimum balance. Its guide asks for CVs, six months of personal bank statements for every shareholder and the Emirates ID and visa of the main signatory. Read about RAKEZ company formation.

SPC Free Zone

SPC charges AED 2,000 for banking assistance and says accounts typically open about three working days after licensing through its nine partner banks. It also says its partner banks accept its flexi desk address, so a separate office is not needed for the account.

SHAMS

SHAMS, the Sharjah Media City free zone, announced a partnership with Wio in September 2026. Wio says accounts can be set up and operating within three business days, subject to its checks. Read about SHAMS free zone company setup.

JAFZA, DAFZA and Dubai South

Companies in Dubai's older free zones apply to the banks directly. Their licences are well known to Dubai banks, and every Dubai free zone company can use the Dubai Unified Licence to share its licence data. Read about JAFZA company formation, DAFZA company setup and Dubai South company setup.

Ajman, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi Free Zones

We found no published banking programme for KEZAD or the Ajman free zones, so their companies apply to banks on their own file. The banks look at the same things everywhere: owners, activity, substance and documents. Read about Ajman and Sharjah free zone company setup.

ADGM and DIFC

ADGM and DIFC are financial free zones with their own laws and registries. Banks know them well, but a company regulated by the FSRA or the DFSA faces extra checks tied to its licence. Read about ADGM company formation and DIFC company formation.

The Dubai Unified Licence Channel

Dubai companies with a Dubai Unified Licence can share their licence data with seven banks: Emirates Islamic, Mashreq, Commercial Bank of Dubai, FAB, Emirates NBD, Emirates Development Bank and Ruya. Dubai's Media Office reported that this cut the average time to open a business account from 65 days to 5 and opened more than 3,000 accounts. It speeds up the paperwork, not the bank's own risk checks.

Free Zone vs Mainland Company Bank Accounts

The Central Bank's rules are the same for both. The difference is how the bank reads the file.

What Banks See in a Mainland Company

A mainland company can trade anywhere in the UAE, has an Ejari lease as proof of address and usually has visas and local customers. That gives the bank a clear local picture, which often makes the file easier.

What Banks See in a Free Zone Company

A free zone company often serves customers abroad, may run from a flexi desk and is more likely to have owners outside the UAE. None of that is a problem on its own, but each point needs evidence. If the company sells to mainland customers, the bank will also want to see the right permit. Read about mainland company formation in the UAE and the types of companies in the UAE.

Offshore Companies Are Different

JAFZA Offshore, RAK ICC and Ajman Offshore companies are not free zone trading companies. They are not meant to trade in the UAE market, have no trade licence for local business and cannot use the free zone banking programmes above.

UAE banks treat them as non-resident structures, with higher balances and longer reviews, and many banks do not take them at all. Read about the best offshore business bank accounts in the UAE and opening an offshore bank account in Dubai.

Free Zone Company Bank Account for Non-Residents

Owners who live abroad have three realistic options. Which one fits depends on whether you plan to move, how much money the company will hold and how soon you need the account.

Get a UAE Visa Through Your Company

Most free zone packages include a visa quota. Once you hold a UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, you can act as the resident signatory most banks ask for. This takes longer, because the visa, medical and Emirates ID come first. Read about the UAE investor visa and free zone visa quota and costs.

Use a Bank Product for Non-Residents

A few bank products accept non-resident owners. FAB's Business Call account is one, with a minimum balance of AED 10,000, but expect a detailed review of foreign ownership and at least one branch visit.

Use Our Partners

Our licensed partners open accounts for free zone companies whose owners live abroad, fully remotely and with no resident signatory. It is the fastest route for a new company that needs to start invoicing.

Which Free Zone Company Bank Account Fits You

The right account depends on how the company earns and spends money. These are the common cases.

Consultants and Service Firms

A consultancy billing clients abroad in several currencies gains most from a multi-currency account with low international fees. A local AED account can come later, once the company has visas and UAE clients.

Traders and Importers

A trading company paying suppliers abroad every week needs cheap international payments and tight currency margins, and may also need a local bank for letters of credit and trade finance. Many traders keep both. Read about the general trading licence in the UAE.

E-Commerce Sellers

Online sellers need an account that marketplaces and payment gateways accept, in the currencies they sell in. The website must match the licence before any gateway approves you. Read about the e-commerce licence in the UAE.

Holding Companies

A free zone holding company has little day-to-day activity, which makes local banks cautious. Show what it owns and where dividends will come from. Read about setting up a holding company in Dubai.

Documents Needed for a Free Zone Company Bank Account

The documents are much the same at every bank and partner. What matters is that they match each other. Our guide to the requirements to open a business bank account in the UAE covers each bank's list in detail.

Company Documents

  • Trade licence and certificate of incorporation issued by the free zone
  • Memorandum and articles of association
  • Share certificates and the register of shareholders
  • Office, flexi desk or lease agreement
  • Board resolution naming the signatories
  • A letter from the free zone authority if the company is still being formed

Emirates Islamic is one of the few banks that publishes a dedicated free zone list, and it accepts an authority letter for companies under formation.

For Each Owner and Signatory

  • Passport copy
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, where held
  • Proof of home address
  • A short CV
  • Six months of personal bank statements, which banks may ask for

For the Business

  • A short business plan or description
  • Signed contracts, invoices or supplier letters
  • A working website that matches the licence
  • A source of funds statement for the initial capital

Attestation for Foreign Shareholders

A resolution passed abroad must be notarised, legalised by the foreign ministry of the country where it was signed and attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This chain takes two to four weeks, so start it while the company is being formed.

Prepare Your Free Zone Company Bank Account File

Most delays come from a file that does not match. We fix that before it is submitted.

  • Documents checked: Licence, articles and resolutions lined up.
  • Substance shown: Contracts, website and activity presented clearly.
  • Ownership mapped: Every layer traced to the real owners.
  • Attestation planned: Foreign papers started on day one.
  • Faster than going direct: One complete file, no rounds of questions.

Free Zone Company Bank Account Costs

At a local bank, the account looks cheap on the monthly fee. The real cost is in the balance you must hold, the fee on every payment and the currency margin.

Where the Money Really Goes

The monthly fee is the smallest number. A company that converts AED 2 million a year and pays a 2% margin loses AED 40,000 to the exchange rate alone, while a 0.5% margin costs AED 10,000. Add AED 30 to AED 50 on every foreign payment and an idle AED 50,000 balance, and the local bank costs far more than its fee suggests.

A local bank can still be cheaper for a company that only pays and gets paid in AED inside the UAE. These figures are planning ranges from published price lists, and we confirm your exact pricing in writing before you apply.

What Happens After the Account Is Open

Opening the account is the start of the relationship, not the end of the checks. Banks and partners review business accounts regularly and can restrict an account that no longer matches its file.

Keep the Company in Good Standing

Renew the licence, the lease or flexi desk and the visas before they expire. An account frozen for an expired licence is common and avoidable, and it can stop salaries and supplier payments for weeks.

Tell the Bank About Changes

Update the bank when owners, signatories or the ownership chain change. The UAE's ownership register must be updated within 15 days of a change, and banks expect the same information.

Match the Payments to the Licence

Large payments that do not fit the licensed activity trigger questions. If the business changes, update the licence first, then tell the bank. Read more about opening a business bank account in the UAE.

Why the Company Comes Before the Account

No bank or partner can open an account for a company that does not exist yet. The licence, the articles and the share register are all needed first. We form UAE free zone companies from €1,899, usually in about a week, and build the bank file at the same time. Read about free zone company formation in the UAE.

Common Free Zone Company Bank Account Mistakes

Choosing a Bank Whose Rule You Fail

Applying to a bank that needs a resident signatory, or one that rejects layered ownership, wastes weeks and leaves a refusal on record. Mashreq NEO BIZ, for example, only takes companies owned 100% by individuals, and Wio needs an Emirates ID holder. Check the bank's published rules against your owners, your balance and your activity before you apply, and pick the route you actually qualify for.

A Licence That Does Not Match the Business

A trading business on a consultancy licence, or mainland sales without a permit, is a common reason for refusal. Banks compare the expected payments with the activities on the licence, and a mismatch reads as risk. Add the right activity, or get the Free Zone Mainland Operating Permit at AED 5,000 for six months if you sell on the Dubai mainland, before you apply.

No Proof of Activity

A new company with a flexi desk and nothing else looks like a shell. Meydan lists insufficient business substance among the main refusal reasons. Signed contracts, invoices, supplier letters, a working website and a one-page business plan change the picture, and visas for staff help further.

Starting Attestation Too Late

Foreign documents take two to four weeks to legalise and attest, because the UAE is not part of the Apostille Convention. Founders who wait until the licence is issued lose a month. Start the chain for every corporate shareholder document on the day you decide to form the company.

Applying to Several Banks at Once

Parallel applications with different answers raise flags, and banks ask whether you have been refused before. Send one strong application to the provider whose rules you meet, then move to the next only after you know why the first one said no.

Get Advice on Your Free Zone Company Bank Account

Not sure which bank or partner will take your file? Talk to us before you apply.

  • Route compared: Local bank or partner, matched to your business.
  • Owners abroad: An account without moving to the UAE.
  • Complex ownership: Holding structures and trusts reviewed.
  • High-risk sectors: Trading, crypto and payments files assessed.
  • A written plan: Clear next steps sent to you after the call.

Bottom Line

A free zone company bank account at a UAE bank is possible, but expect a resident signatory, a large balance and a close look at your substance. The Central Bank's three-day rule helps only low-risk, complete files. Our licensed partners open multi-currency accounts for free zone companies remotely, with no minimum balance and lower payment costs, and we build the file with you.

Start with the company, the licence that matches your business and a complete document set. Then choose the route you qualify for, send one strong application and keep the company in good standing once the account is open. That is how a free zone company bank account opens in days rather than months.
